ROYAL CONTRACT FOR POLAR

20th January 2015

Polar has been awarded the fabrication and installation of the internal courtyard windows, external doors and curtain walling for the prestigious new £429 million Royal Liverpool University Hospital project. The Polar contract is worth over £1.5 million, and will begin on site in February 2015. The main contractor is Carillion.

The project is for the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust, and it replaces the existing Royal University Hospital in Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter. When completed in 2017, it will have a 646-bed capability and will be the largest hospital in the country, with a 40-bed critical care unit, 18 operating theatres and one of the largest emergency departments in the North West of England.

Polar's work will involve two internal courtyards, covering 13 floors and featuring windows and curtain walling, amounting to over 2,700 sq metres of glazing. It is a major project win for Polar after numerous £750K to £1m projects, and represents the next step in Polar's growing portfolio of work for major national contractors such as Carillion.

Polar business development director John Wilson commented: "This is a significant project for the Polar team and takes us one step closer to the UK major league. We have proven our strengths to main contractors on a number of key public sector developments and refurbishments around the North of England, and are now being entrusted with more complex, high-value projects."

The new hospital will be one of the UK's greenest buildings, with renewable energy systems and low carbon technology.
